“Aircon gas” is the common term used by customers for the refrigerant circulating through the air-conditioning system. The refrigerant transfers heat from the indoor space to the outdoor unit so the system can produce cool air.
A properly operating air-conditioning system uses a closed refrigerant circuit. Refrigerant should not normally disappear simply because the system is used. When the refrigerant charge is low, the cause may be a leak, an earlier service or installation condition, or another system issue. This is why a professional assessment is more useful than automatically adding gas every time the aircon becomes less cold.

The correct refrigerant depends on the air-conditioning system. Do not choose a refrigerant only from the age or brand of the unit.

R410A is used in many air-conditioning systems. The refrigerant type should be confirmed from the equipment nameplate before service.

If the aircon has heavy dirt buildup, restricted airflow, blocked drainage, an electrical fault, a fan problem or another equipment issue, adding refrigerant may not solve the complaint. In those situations, a general aircon service, chemical cleaning or troubleshooting visit may be more appropriate.
If the system repeatedly loses refrigerant, the more important question is why the refrigerant level is dropping. Repeated top ups without investigating the underlying problem can lead to repeated service costs without addressing the actual fault.

Weak or warm cooling, unusually long operating time, unusual ice formation, or a history of repeated gas top ups can indicate a refrigerant-related problem. These symptoms can also have other causes, so the system should be checked before adding refrigerant.
Refrigerant circulates in a closed system and should not normally be consumed like fuel. If a system repeatedly has low refrigerant, the cause should be investigated, including possible leakage, previous service or installation conditions.
Common refrigerants include R22, R410A and R32. The correct refrigerant should be confirmed from the equipment nameplate or manufacturer information. R22, R410A and R32 are not interchangeable.
RM Acelect's current guide is R22 at S$18 per 10 PSI, R410A at S$28 per 1 BAR and R32 at S$28 per 1 BAR. A typical split-system average is around S$90 for R22 and S$120 for R410A or R32. Actual charges depend on the system condition, refrigerant required and work performed.
It can restore cooling when low refrigerant is confirmed, but not every cooling problem is caused by low gas. Dirty coils, restricted airflow, electrical faults, fan problems and other equipment conditions can also cause poor cooling.
Repeated refrigerant top ups should prompt further investigation. A possible leak or another underlying issue may need to be identified and repaired instead of repeatedly adding refrigerant.
